GET LUCKY

This week we learned about the organization context.

Environment is the surroundings where people, animals, or plat lives. And can also be defined as where the business operates. There are 3 layers in a business which are Internal, Competitive, and External environment. The reason Why we a so conscious about business’s environment is because it is important for business survive. For a new entrants business, we can use the tools to help us to analyze the market. There are five forces that we could define it as tools (Porter’s Five Forces): which are Threat of substitute, Bargaining Power of suppliers and Buyers, The threat of New Entrants, and the Rivalry in this industry.  I would put those in a business of supermarket, which is a new entrant business.

Lecturer also mention the barrier of entry which including experience, Eco of scale (very interesting example on mugs),distribution(coke cola) and government. If the government want to encourage a business they will deregulated which means the barrier is low , if they regulated the barrier is high.  

Before the mini group tutorial I did case study on steel industry and watched the video on study direct. When we were discussing the 5 forces of steel industry in seminar. It was fun , like I mention before I learned a lot from it and from my friends. Maybe we had different opinion but we talked about it. Whether I am right or wrong , it will brings deeper understanding. So..argument is great and I like it! 

To be honest,it has been a tough week for me but finally make through it. Luckily reading week is coming, I can catch up some reading which I fall behind and start to get familiar with case study which Vish told us it’s quite important in our examination on December.

Last but not least, CATCH UP SOME SLEEP! XD

1 Month.

It has been 1 month since I came to university of Sussex. I found that the course is getting more complicated than the beginning, well I should put more effort on it. 

We learned management theories this week. First of all, the function of management,which  includes planning,organizing,leading and controlling. Then comes with Frederick Taylor, the  father of scientific management, his theory is based on efficiency and Productivity. I did a little  research on him and it was impressed. Specially his experience at Bethlehem steel company.  I am agree with him at some point, for instance waste minimized - time, materials, money etc. 

But he pointed out that there is a “best person” to do the job, the others follows. I was wondering is it the best way to organized? “Best person”say it, the others just follows? I mean ,What if the “best person”made mistake? Team or group  needs opinion in order to achieve the objectives, I think the PERFECT way only exist if there are enough debate and argument before it comes  out. Maybe I misunderstanding the theory, I will do more research on him later on.

After Taylor, Rob introduced Max Weber, the theory of Bureaucracy. Actually I do think that a  organization needs rules but at some point  minimal employee discretion may become a  disadvantage. Then, Henri Fayol, which is fundamental Management Principles. The division  of labour, fair remuneration and centralization are quite vital. What is more, about discipline,  which refers to every employees have to obey the rules, he thinks good discipline leads to  effective leadership.

Besides, I found something interesting while I am doing the research. A woman called Mary  Parker Follett, she is the pioneer in organization theory and organization behavior. Her life was a  legend.  I think I will do more research on her as well.

By the way, our presentation on Google is quite nice, I will keep carry on.

Carry On~

This is the second week since we begin to study business and management. I learned a lot 

from this subject and I can tell how a organization is processing. I'm really start into business 

and management and I think it is a good sign to go far in my study life. 

The topic of this week is organization design and structure , in the beginning i find it’s 

complicated especially when vish told us about matrix structure. And we discuss about this 

question in the class , after that I done some reading then I find it is clearer than before. Thus 

reading textbook is vital in our study life.

In the mini group of midweek we start doing our first business report. We have no idea how to 

do it in the first place. But we decided choose a topic first--McDonald’s. The reason why we choose is because McDonald’s is the world’s largest chained fast food restaurant ,and we all know it since we were young.  

we were searching the internet and trying to find something link to this organization. 

Everyone in our group works hard and I’m really like it when we doing things together to achieve our target. After searching and discussion we find out how this organization runs, the division of work and the structure of it. 

Then in the mini tutorial group, vish and the other group pointed out something we can improve 

in our business report such as the content , subheadings and conclusion. Furthermore ,we 

should explain it clearly and find evidence to proof our opinion , not just put a diagram in the 

report. 

After this lesson we did it again and vish said it is better than last time. I'm really glad to hear that. 

And We learned a lot , and we learned from each other , that is the most important thing I think.

New challenge

Last week we had a new challenge for our study group,which is choose one of the management settings and find an organization within that setting, prepare a presentation. 

Actually we haven't meet up for a discussion before, i mean, a real “discussion”. Although we know each other’s name but we just had a few conversation in class. I was thinking that we should be friends, thus we can communicate more. 

Then we decided to choose “British Airways ”and meet up at dinner time.Amy bring her laptop with PREZI(which is an awesome software for presentation just like PowerPoint.) It is an amazing time, i mean, we sitting together eating fish&chips,talking about the questions like organization structure,main challenges etc. I can still remember there was a little debate on “add values”, something cames up and we think & discuss about those ideas. After dinner, we divided the whole PREZI into 4 different part, i am the one who in charge of stated mission and identify core product and service.

On Monday we are the second group to do the presentation which is about British Airways.

Vish asked the first group to think about how to do it then come back. To be honest, i was a little bit panic, like what i gonna do if i forget what i gonna say about my topic? 

Amy forgot her Facebook password that is why we can not log in our PREZI account, Hailey asked some questions to the audience to fill the gap and it is really helpful. Actually i am grateful when vish encourages me with a smile and Joey was nodding to me even though i was i am too nervous to speak clearly. And Philip, Hailey and Amy have done really well during the time. 

I think we can do better next time, for example, who gonna fill the gap when one of members is dealing with the laptop or technical problems. For me, i should slow down so the audience can hear me clearly. With more confident maybe. 

What is more,we got a new member---JOEY!Now we 5 are already friends,  i believe we can work together really well!! 

Amazing Activity~

Last Friday we had a brilliant activity in our group. First, we read a piece of paper which given by vish , its about how to use different irrelevant things to make something new. There are several examples,like the innocent，a big company in UK, they use fresh fruit,squeeze them, packing with different color, then sell them in a high price. Actually we can do it by ourselves in home!

After the examples, vish asked every group should comes up an idea with three different things: hammer, air bag and shaver.  Then, vish told us to choose 3 items on the table, we should producing something new and sell it to the boss of a big company afterwards.  He give us 30 mins to think about it,but we only have one minute to introduce our product. Our group had chosen pinecone,hook and tablet. We discussed about the possibilities and drew it in piece of paper. Because everything is possible in this case, brilliant ideas came out from all of members. I really enjoy it! We decided to use hook to hang the pinecone and each of the leaves can extended in ord to put things on it. What’s more, it can also absorbing the harmful gas in the room since it is natural. We can use tablet as button to control it up and down,left and right. There is tube inside of it, which can be used as a lamp during night. Finally,we had our 1 minute presentation to everyone in this class. The whole lesson  was amazing! I learned a lot form it, like teamwork,time management and most vital part is we should be more creative in the daily life.
