Tesco PESTEL analysis

This week we learned PESTEL analysis which is a framework of macro-environment factors used in the environmental scanning component of strategic management. And last nigh I went to Tesco and I was thinking  why can’t I do a PESTEL analysis of it since Tesco is the third-largest retailer (after Walmart&Carrefour) in the world measured by revenues("Global Powers of Retailing 2010". Deloitte. Retrieved 18 August 2010)

 

First of all is the political factor,government banned the employment law which Tesco must followed in order to avoid legal hurdles. I believe that the local government are happy about this due to this organization can increasing employment rates. For instance,the local people can get a job and income to make a living etc. 

Secondly,the economic factor are likely effect the demand/price of goods in this market.There is no doubt that Tesco still depending on UK market even though it has been open stores in fourteen countries all over the world. So if there is a recession in UK economy Tesco would be affected by any factors.For example,interest,inflation rates and local unemployment levels. It would also Next, demographic changes such as aging population and behaviors/attitudes of consumers are the vital social factors which can effect on business. For example, nowadays consumers are becoming more and more aware of health issues so Tesco increased the demand of organic goods.

 
Then comes to the technology factors, I think improving technologies can benefit both organization and consumers such as using technologies to improve consumers satisfaction. Such as self checkout machines/ wireless devices.Next is legal factors.Government legislation and policies have a direct impact on the performance of Tesco. For instance, the Food Retailing Commission (FRC)enforced to use standard pricing for goods which means they can’t change the price without notice.
Finally is the environment factors. Organization like Tesco have to take social responsibility such as cut waste, reduce consumption of resources and minimize environmental damage while they developing goods.
